 The Beer..

As the weather begins to cool and the leaves begin to change, it’s time to change up our beer styles. It is Stout season. We chose Leinenkugels Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout this month.

In May 1867, the Leinenkugel family brewery was founded in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin by Jacob Leinenkugel. He was a family man driven by an iron work ethic, and he knew that his German family heritage would play an integral part of his brewery’s success.  And today Leinenkugel’s is a very popular beer at Hanover Wine and Spirits.  From it summer favorite Summer Shandy to the classic Leinies Original.

We know that stouts aren’t for everyone.  Many say that they are too thick, too dark, or too heavy.  We feel that you must give stout’s a chance.  And we gave Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout a chance and we LOVED it.

BEER INFO:

Beer:                    Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout

Brewery:              Jacob Leinenkugel, Chippewa Falls, WI

Beer Style:           Russian Imperial Stout

ABV:                     9.5%

IBU:                      75

Color                    Dark Chocolate Brown

There is a great line-up of Big Eddy edition beers: Uder Oktoberfest, Cherry Doppelschwarz, Royal Nektar and Russian Imperial Stout.

What did we think?

As we poured the beer into our glass the first impression was; “man that is dark and thick”.  Learn to control your first impressions. You could immediately smell the “roastyness” of the beer.  Leinies uses 11 different malts and grains to create an incredibly balanced, flavorful stout.  We immediately picked up on the sweet chocolate and toffee flavors, that, by the way, we really enjoyed. At 75 IBU’s, it delivers a hop punch from the three different hops used to brew this full bodied beverage.

A couple of things to keep in mind with this beer.

First at 9.5% ABV, this is not a let’s kill a six pack beer.

This is a beer that you can hold on to. This will get better with age. Many people will buy this beer and “cellar” it, meaning let it sit in their cellar and age. The flavors will become more intense as it ages.

This is a seasonal that you will only be able to find from February – March, so you have a very short window to find the beer. Yet, if you can find one in a local liquor store from last season, the beer will not go bad. Grab it and enjoy.

The Beer..

This month’s beer is a continuation of our Minnesota series. It is a White IPA out of Badger Hill Brewery.

It’s brewed out of Shakopee Minnesota and is available during the summer. The beer is available in 12oz cans.

Badger Hill brewery started in 2010 and for the first few years bottled through a partnership program with Lucid Brewery out of Minnetonka. In 2014 they moved to their new facility in Shakopee.  The Krekelberg family who own Badger Hill started brewing together in the early 90’s.

Now being an IPA, you really need to try it to get a good feeling on what the beer is like.  So let’s get into the beer a little.

BEER INFO:

Beer:                    White IPA

Brewery:              Badger Hill brewery, Shakopee, MN

Beer Style:           India Pale Ale (IPA)

ABV:                     5.6%

IBU:                      50

Color                    Pale White

The White IPA from Badger Hill is an unfiltered Belgian Whit IPA.  This is an award winning beer from Badger Hill. They took a gold medal at the 2014 Great American Beer Fest, and a silver medal at the 2015 US Beer Open Championship.

What did we think?

We poured our IPAs into a glass to unleash the full aroma of the beer. The beer pours lighter in color, but do not let that fool you. The first aroma that grabs you is the coriander. It has a strong, citrus aroma and a familiar smell that will float up and grab you.

This is an amazing summer beer that starts out light and then brings in the flavor of hops, coriander and orange zest. The bouquet of the beer settles into your sinuses with a clean and refreshing scent.

The Beer Guys from Hanover rate this a must have summer beer in your refrigerator. A true medal winner!

The Beer..

This month’s beer is a Minnesota IPA out of Lift Bridge brewery called Hop dish.

It is brewed out of Stillwater Minnesota and available year round in the store. This year the beer was made available in both 12oz bottles and 16oz cans.

Lift Bridge brewery started in 2001 during a poker game. The players that fateful day discovered their mutual love of brewing and the rest they say is history.  Their beer portfolio currently consists of around a seventeen regular, seasonal, and limited release beers.

Now being an IPA, you really need to try it to get a good feeling on what the beer is like.  So let’s get into the beer a little.

BEER INFO:

Beer:                    Hop Dish

Brewery:              Lift Bridge Brewery, Stillwater, MN

Beer Style:           India Pale Ale (IPA)

ABV:                     7.5%

IBU:                      75

Color                    Amber

Their Hop dish IPA is part of their regular or “Flagship” series. The name is playful reference to the Minnesota hot dish tradition. In fact they call out that the Hop Dish beer is created with a “pot-luck of seven hop varieties”.

What did we think?

We pour our IPAs into a glass to unleash the full aroma of the beer. The beer pours a rich amber color and will produce a nice foamy head when poured. The beer was easy to control and we were able to regulate just how much foam we had by adjusting the angle of the glass. The head quickly recedes leaving only the body of the beer. When you breathe in the fragrance of the beer, the first thing that jumps out at you is a light malt smell.

First impression is that the Citra hops jump out at you right out of the can. The initial bitterness from the Centennial hops lightly hits the back of your tongue followed by a refreshing citrus finish to the beer.

Now this beer is defiantly not over the top hopped if that is what you are looking for. Lift Bridge has a great line up for all of your “hop” needs. Hanover Wine and Spirts carries the complete “Flagship” line-up: Farm Girl, Getaway, Chestnut Hill and Crosscut.

Not a one and done beer, you can sit back and enjoy a few of them, but be warned at 7.5% ABV it will sneak up on you! The Beer Guys from Hanover rate this a must have beer in your refrigerator. A great beer for those days when your neighbor stops over unexpectedly, on your deck on a sunny day or for your next “beer” potluck. You betcha!  @liftbridge

The Beer..

This Misfit out of Lake Barrington Illinois showed up in the store (Hanover Wine and Spirits) towards the end of March. One of the first things that caught our eye was the light green can, with Mexican skull art on the front of it.

Wild Onion started brewing beer outside of Chicago in 1996.  Their beer portfolio currently consists of around a dozen regular and seasonal beers. Hanover Wine and Spirits currently has two beers from Wild Onion in stock. They are the Misfit and the Hop Slayer (Double IPA) in stock.

Now being an IPA, you really need to try it to get a good feeling on what the beer is like.  So let’s get into the beer a little.
